About POTTS POINT, and surrounding areas

Potts Point was previously known as Woolloomooloo Hill. Located east of the city centre, it is one of Sydney‘s oldest suburbs. Formerly the home of rich landowners such as its namesake Joseph Potts. It is still a hot spot for the wealthy and influential, and there are plenty of things to see and do in Potts Point during your Australia vacation.

Leave the car keys on the hook and step out into a neighbourhood like no other: the Potts Point area rewards walkers with both the fresh and familiar, underscoring its great lifestyle and possibilities.

Potts Point holds the crown of being one of Sydney’s most walkable suburbs. No matter what you’re after, there’s a walk to suit you. Here are five of our favourites.

THINGS TO SEE AND DO

  • Take a stroll down Macleay Street, the beating heart of Potts Point. Macleay Street combines a selection of beautiful homes, exciting culture, fine dining, sociable cafes and architectural gems. Stylish, urban and yet green, it has a real buzz, with the feel of one of Europe or America’s great cities.

  • Take a walk along the water and up the hill to the Art Gallery of NSW, one of Australia’s finest art galleries located in one of the world’s most beautiful settings. The light-filled gallery houses a selection of international fine art and an iconic Australian collection including famous names like Margaret Preston and John Olsen.

Close by is the entrance to Sydney’s Royal Botanic Garden, the city’s emerald oasis. Have a wander around and soak in the beautiful shaded walks, fascinating plants and stunning harbour views.

  • Potts Point and the surrounding neighbourhoods are steeped in history and offer so many interesting buildings – a living canvas. Try the NSW Twentieth Century Heritage Society walk winding from Wylde Street to Elizabeth Bay road. Following that route yields a smorgasboard of architectural styles, ranging from Art Deco to a Spanish Mission influence and from Functionalism to Modernism. These interesting buildings demonstrate the area has always been at the forefront of style and taste with people choosing to live in interesting, beautiful buildings, unafraid to experiment and experience the new.

  • 7 Onslow Ave, Elizabeth Bay

Head north of Potts Point to go to Garden Island. It houses the East Royal Australian Navy fleet base. Additionally, it houses the busy dockyards such as Captain Cooks Graving Dock perceived to be one of the biggest in the southern hemisphere. Furthermore, there is also a Naval Heritage Museum admissible to the common public.

Inaugurated in 2005, the continual ‘In Peace and War’ display is a must see. You should also halt by the Salthorse Cafe and experience the stunning views of Sydney harbour over a drink or a delicious lunch? Alternatively, the gardens and green space after the centre are the ideal points for a picnic or barbecue in the sunlight.

  • 6 Cowper Wharf Roadway, Woolloomooloo

The Woolloomooloo Finger Wharf was previously a wool and cargo dock. It still retains the privilege of the longest timbered-piled wharf in the world. Furthermore, it is a fabulous place for a day out. Restored during the late 1990s, this elegant Edwardian wharf is presently one of Sydney’s most elite and upscale dockside addresses and is also home to many upmarket bars, establishments and hotels. In conclusion, it is one of the fancy things to see and do in Potts Point, Sydney.

  • 43 – 51 Cowper Wharf Road, Woolloomooloo

This stylish latest gallery owns a huge selection of both Australian and International modern artworks. Space is filled with pieces, from modern painting to audiovisual installations, and it radiates power and intensity, making this a very interesting place to visit. Founded in 1983, Artspace is a not-for-profit organisation that shows off the art of up-and-coming artists through

    lively and appealing displays.

  • Fitzroy Gardens, 64-68 MacLeay Street, Elizabeth Bay

The award-winning El Alamein War Memorial fountain in Fitzroy Gardens was created by artist Robert Woodward. It is well-deserving of a visit as it is one of the best things to see and do in Potts Point, Sydney. It was Established in 1961 in remembrance of the Australian Imperial Forces 9th Division.

The fountain acknowledges the Battle of El Alamein in Egypt during World War II. Its modern design is quite eye-grabbing and certainly makes you pause and ponder. Thanks to the breeze and sunshine, the shades and patterns of the water are continually shifting, giving this feature fluid flow and natural presence of its own.

  • The McElhone Stairs are renowned around Sydney and join Woolloomooloo on the coast to Potts Point on the hill. These stairs are a famous place for fitness fanatics and measure up a steep 113 steps in sum. However, whether you’re one or not, they are worth the climb just for the beautiful scenery across the city. It was formed in 1870 and is one of the popular things to see and do in Potts Point.

  • 67 Macleay Street, Sydney

For a feeling of the high life, why not tour the Potts Point Galleries? You can find a surplus of the finest artefacts obtained from 15 of the most important dealers in Australia? Browse one-of-a- kind items, from old Egyptian vases to grand 20th-century artwork and high-value vintage couture. Whether you’re seeking to purchase or just seeing for curiosity’s purpose, the Potts Point Galleries will not fail.

  • This surprisingly heritage-listed Coca Cola neon billboard was first built in 1976 when it becomes recognised as the gateway to the Cross (Kings Cross station). Furthermore, it is supposedly the largest billboard advertisement in the southern hemisphere, measuring up at 41 meters wide and made up of 800 lights, this sign has highlighted on many music videos and has grown into a landmark meeting position and photo spot for visitors from all over the globe.

  • Taronga Zoo is only a 15-minute drive or can be reached by a short ferry ride. The world-famous zoo is home to over 2,600 species and has many animals that are endemic to Australia.

  • Luna Park is an iconic venue in Sydney being both an amusement park and entertainment attraction. It has been open since 1935 and is a wonderful experience for the whole family.

  • Bondi Beach is world renowned. Even if you haven’t been, chances are you’ve heard of it and once you see it, you’ll realise why it deserves its reputation. The curved expanse of soft, white sand, the crashing waves and sandstone cliffs all combine to create a spectacular seaside suburb. Bondi epitomises Sydney’s laid-back beach lifestyle and has something for everyone.

Professional lifesavers patrol the beach all year and even have a reality TV show, Bondi Rescue. With a temperate climate, locals and visitors swim year-round and surfers can be spotted in the waves at dawn. A fun way to experience Bondi is to learn to surf at a surf school, such as Let’s Go Surfing.

Bondi is also home to one of the oldest surf lifesaving clubs in the world and one of Australia’s oldest swimming clubs, iconic Bondi Icebergs at the southern end of the beach. You can swim laps with the Icebergs, the nickname given to those brave enough to go winter swimming, in the Bondi Baths.

  • Just a ferry ride from Circular Quay and you’ll arrive at Manly! You are spoilt for choice when it comes to Manly Beach (a short walk from the wharf). Whether you want to spread a towel out and enjoy the soft white sand all day, surf its waves or explore its depths while snorkelling or diving, there's something for everyone. For those that prefer to look at it, it also makes a great backdrop for picnics or walking and cycle tracks.

Manly is where the world's first surfing contest was held in 1964, making it one of Australia's most famous beaches. The iconic beach curves from South Steyne to North Steyne and Queenscliff, where a submerged reef, or bombora, creates the waves that inspire the world's best surfers to travel to our shores.
