About Yerrinbool and surrounding areas

The Southern Highlands is a foodie's paradise, with rich volcanic soils supporting a range of produce, including beef, dairy and truffles. The high altitude is perfect for cool climate wines, with plenty of cellar doors to visit. There are many acclaimed restaurants too, such as Eschalot and Ludo.

There’s something for every kind of traveller in the Southern Highlands of NSW, a long- favoured escape for Sydneysiders. The cooler, more temperate climate and picture-perfect villages set amongst green rolling hills and forest reserves have been attracting visitors for more than 140 years.

There’s more than a touch of class to the towns of the Southern Highlands, from their perfectly restored colonial architecture to impeccably maintained gardens and estates. Bowral, the largest town, is home to elegant boutiques and restaurants, as well as the annual Tulip Time Festival and the Bradman Museum and International Cricket Hall of Fame.

A short drive southwest is the village of Berrima, with its convict-built Surveyor General Inn. Mittagong is a picturesque town with fine colonial buildings and specialty stores. The picture-postcard village of Robertson was the setting for the film Babe. Make sure to stop for a pie at the famous bakery.

THINGS TO SEE AND DO

  • The Bradman Museum and International Cricket Hall of Fame is located in the NSW Southern Highlands, in the town of Bowral. It is situated in an area known as Glebe Park, which includes Bradman Oval and parkland. The adjacent children's playground is cricket themed and has a gas barbecue for picnics.

The Bradman Museum houses state-of-the-art interactive experiences and a museum collection of national significance to suit everyone's interest. It begins with the Origins of Cricket and travels through all the significant eras through to the Big Bash League.

Visitors should allow at least 90 minutes to experience the extensive exhibits within the Bradman Museum. Their facilities include public and accessible toilets, car parking, cricket nets, and visitor information.

The Bradman Education Program has grown over the years to encompass the study of history, geography, English as well as science and sport. Pre and post activities are available.

  • Wander among the rainforest and towering eucalypts, experience scenic views, enjoy picnicking and bushwalking along the Illawarra escarpment, near Wollongong and Kiama.

The park’s steep sandstone ridges and gullies provide diverse habitats for local wildlife. Amid heathland, rainforest and tall moist eucalypt forest live lyrebirds, satin bowerbirds, koalas, possums, wombats, swamp wallabies, goannas and platypus. The park is also an important habitat for threatened tiger quolls and long-nosed potoroos.

With terrific bushwalking and birdwatching opportunities, wonderful waterfalls, views to the ocean and the blazing crimson of Illawarra flame trees, Macquarie Pass National Park is well worth a visit if you’re looking for things to do on the south coast.

Paste

105 Main Street, Mittagong

WEBSITE

Paste is renowned for its modern approach to traditional Thai recipes, with Santongun leading the kitchen and Bailey working in research and back of house. The couple have spent years travelling across Thailand, digging up old recipes, learning from the country’s minority populations and foraging ingredients from forests, riverbanks and beaches. The resulting cuisine is textural and original, complemented with one of Bangkok’s best wine lists.

Expect recognisable Thai dishes with creative twists, such as satay chicken wings with Mekhong (a Thai spirit) and pickled cucumber sauce; pad thai with Australian blue swimmer crab and dried scallop floss; and massaman curry made with lamb rather than the usual beef.

Robertson Pie Shop

WEBSITE

Kangaroo Valley Bakehouse

150 Moss Vale Road, Kangaroo Valley

WEBSITE

One reviewer said: I have to admit I have never had pies so full of real ingredients, lovely flavours, freshly baked in the premises of course. I have refused to tell my doctor how many I had over the weekend. Absolutely highly recommended.

And another: It was a great day for a pie and so glad we stopped here. Both my husband and I had the chunky beef. It was devine, definitely chunky and pastry was fabulous. We followed this with an excellent coffee and the best vanilla slice ever!!!

Cellar Door

10 Manning Street, Kiama

WEBSITE

Marco is developing a menu that pairs perfectly with the wines produced at the Southern Highlands Winery vineyard. ‘What we are trying to do is embrace that connection between the traditional Italian cooking here at the restaurant and the winery.’

Local produce is a BIG focus. Marco sources vegetables grown locally, catches yabbies from a nearby dam and works with local Highlands farmers to also provide meat such as rabbit and quail. Marco wants people to enjoy their dining experience at SHW and to take their time savouring the delicious cuisine.

OWNERS PICK!

Burrawang Village Hotel

14-16 Hoddle Street, Burrawang

WEBSITE

Located in the historic town of Burrawang, it’s one of the few surviving pubs in the Highlands that hasn’t been totally gentrified. Its first incarnation, the Prince Alfred, was built in 1866 just down Hoddle Street, and this newer version, an imposing two storey brick building, was built in the 1920s.

Its big wooden front door is heavy with history and the smell that greets you is warm and beery. It’s early evening and there are a few locals in the public bar enjoying a drink. Along the hall, Peter and Kate have put in a new kitchen and renovated the restaurant, which seats up to 40. Like the pub, it is open seven days for lunch and dinner.
